Once Israeli tanks crossed the Suez Canal in strength, the war entered a new phase on the west bank. Avraham Adan’s division moved into Egypt proper, shifting the campaign from bridgehead survival to exploitation against the rear of the Egyptian armies. Crossing into Africa mattered operationally because Israeli armor could now threaten surface-to-air missile sites, artillery positions, road networks, supply lines, and command systems that had sustained Egypt’s bridgeheads in Sinai. The movement did not erase Egypt’s opening achievement, but it forced Cairo to defend in a direction its original plan had not emphasized. Armored warfare here becomes a contest over rear areas, logistics, and the ability to make the enemy’s success face the wrong way.
