Golan Heights: Episode 5 — The Purple Line
The Purple Line was the ceasefire boundary created after 1967, but by 1973 it had become a defensive system of bunkers, observation posts, minefields, anti-tank ditches, patrol roads, and prepared tank firing ramps. This episode explains how Israel intended those defenses to slow a Syrian assault until reserves could mobilize and reach the Golan. It also shows why fixed defenses were never enough by themselves. A strongpoint could report enemy movement, but it could be isolated; a ditch could delay armor, but only if covered by fire; a firing ramp could protect a tank, but also become a known target. The Purple Line was formidable, incomplete, and utterly dependent on the crews holding the spaces between its positions.
