Second El Alamein: Episode 23 — The Line Cracks

The line at El Alamein did not break all at once. It had been mined, wired, dug, shelled, attacked, reinforced, and counterattacked for days before the decisive change became visible. Operation Supercharge struck a defense already strained by the Australian pressure in the north, the crumbling phase in the center, and the relentless weight of British artillery and air power. The sacrifice of 9th Armoured Brigade helped batter the anti-tank screen that guarded the deeper Axis position, and behind that sacrifice larger armored forces pressed forward. This episode matters because it captures the moment when attrition began to turn into movement. A battle that had seemed locked inside minefields and gun lines suddenly began to open, not because resistance vanished, but because the Axis system could no longer recover from each blow.

For more than a week, the Eighth Army had been trying to make a hole in a defense designed to absorb penetration. The Axis line had depth, and that depth had repeatedly slowed the British advance. Infantry could seize ground, but tanks might not get through. Engineers could open lanes, but those lanes could jam. Artillery could suppress positions, but some guns survived. Counterattacks could restore local situations or at least delay the next British move. That was the pattern of the early battle. Supercharge changed the pattern because it concentrated force at a moment when Rommel’s reserves were tired, fuel was short, and the northern fighting had already pulled attention toward the coast. The defense was still dangerous, but its margin for repair was shrinking.

The fighting around Tel el Aqqaqir and the Rahman track became central to this change. These were not grand landmarks in the ordinary sense, but they mattered because they lay near the deeper routes and defensive positions behind the Axis front. If British armor could push beyond this zone, the battle would no longer be confined to the original mine belts. The Eighth Army would begin to threaten the rear of the Axis line and force Rommel to decide whether to hold, counterattack, or withdraw. For the listener imagining the battlefield, the direction remained east to west. The British were trying to push through the last defended depth, while the Axis tried to keep a door shut that was beginning to splinter.

After the costly attack by 9th Armoured Brigade, the larger armored formations had to exploit the damage without losing their own cohesion. This was not simple. The battlefield was crowded, visibility was poor at times, and the enemy still possessed anti-tank guns and armor. British armored units had to move forward through routes that had been fought over, past wrecks, gun positions, mine patches, and exhausted infantry. The temptation after a hard-won opening is to imagine a sudden clear road. In reality, the road to breakthrough was still contested. Tanks had to deploy, find targets, avoid mines, and coordinate with artillery and neighboring units. Movement was increasing, but it was not yet freedom.

Rommel’s armored reserves struck back because they had no other choice. German panzer units remained tactically capable, and their counterattacks could still create danger for British armor trying to push through. But the balance had shifted. Fuel shortages limited the number and scale of Axis movements. Allied air attack made daylight movement hazardous. The pressure of the previous days had reduced the number of serviceable tanks and tired the crews who remained. A counterattack that might once have restored the situation now risked becoming one more costly effort that consumed the strength needed for the next crisis. Rommel’s army was still fighting, but it was fighting with a shrinking ability to choose when and where.

The Eighth Army’s artillery continued to weigh heavily on the defense. Guns fired against enemy batteries, troop concentrations, anti-tank positions, and suspected routes of counterattack. Artillery had been important from the opening night, but now its effect was cumulative. It kept defenders under strain, made movement more dangerous, and helped British armor and infantry survive the moments when Axis counterblows formed. The Desert Air Force added another layer by attacking roads, vehicle columns, and supply movement behind the front. Neither artillery nor air power made the breakthrough automatic, but together they narrowed the Axis army’s options. A force short of fuel and under observation cannot shift reserves with the freedom it needs to seal a breach.

The German and Italian troops holding the line faced a situation that could become impossible without looking hopeless at first. A company might still be in position, a gun crew might still be firing, and a local counterattack might still push back an exposed British unit. Yet the larger pattern was deteriorating. Communications were damaged, neighboring positions were uncertain, reserves were being pulled in different directions, and the front no longer felt stable. This is how defensive systems often fail. They do not always vanish in a dramatic instant. They lose the ability to connect local resistance into a coherent whole. At El Alamein, many Axis soldiers continued to fight hard even as the structure around them began to crack.

The Italian formations in the line were especially vulnerable to this kind of collapse because many were short of transport and fuel. Infantry could hold a position with courage, but if the army around it began to retreat and there were not enough vehicles to move men quickly, courage could become entrapment. Italian units had been part of the Axis defensive system throughout the battle, and many fought under severe material disadvantages. As the line began to crack, those disadvantages became deadly. German mobile units could sometimes pull back faster or reorganize more easily, while less motorized formations risked being left behind. The coming retreat would expose this imbalance with harsh clarity, but the warning signs were already present as Supercharge broke the front open.

For Montgomery, the line cracking created its own command problem. The Eighth Army had spent days trying to manufacture movement, but once movement began, the army had to exploit it before the enemy escaped. This was not as easy as it sounds. Armored formations that had fought through mines and gun lines needed fuel, ammunition, recovery, and orders. Routes had to be cleared of wrecks and marked well enough for traffic to flow westward. Infantry still had to secure ground and protect the shoulders of the breach. Commanders had to distinguish between real collapse and a temporary opening that might become a trap. Victory in armored warfare often depends on recognizing the moment when pressure should become pursuit. That moment was arriving, but it still had to be handled.

The change in morale was also significant. For the Eighth Army, the early frustration of a break-in without breakthrough had been psychologically draining. Soldiers had seen the plan slow in the Devil’s Gardens, watched tanks burn, and endured counterattacks that made victory feel distant. As the Axis line began to give, the meaning of those sacrifices changed. The infantry who had held northern positions, the engineers who had opened lanes, the gunners who had fired day after day, and the tank crews who had advanced into anti-tank screens could now see that the defense was weakening. Morale in battle is not simply optimism. It is the sense that effort is producing result. Supercharge began to provide that sense.

For the Axis troops, the opposite pressure grew. A defender can endure great hardship if he believes the line will hold and reserves will arrive. When those beliefs weaken, every local danger feels larger. Reports of British armor beyond expected positions, uncertainty about neighboring units, and orders to counterattack with limited fuel all contributed to a sense that the battle’s old balance had changed. Rommel understood the danger more clearly than many men in forward positions could. He knew that if the British broke through decisively, his army might be pinned against the desert with too little fuel to escape. The line was not merely losing ground. It was losing the ability to decide its own future.

The cracking of the line at El Alamein is important in the history of armored warfare because it shows the moment when a set-piece battle finally produces operational movement. The breakthrough was not a miracle performed by tanks alone. It was the product of intelligence, deception, artillery, infantry, engineers, logistics, air superiority, and armor applied over time until the defense could no longer maintain depth. Tanks mattered enormously at the cracking point because they turned penetration into threat. Once armor could operate beyond the immediate mine belts, the Axis had to think not only about holding positions, but about saving the army. That transition from positional resistance to operational danger is the heart of armored warfare.

By the close of this phase, the battle was no longer the same battle that had begun on 23 October. The Axis line had not dissolved into nothing, and many German and Italian soldiers still fought with discipline and courage. But the defensive system had been pierced deeply enough that Rommel faced a new reality. Holding every position might mean losing the army. Pulling back might be the only way to preserve anything, yet withdrawal under pressure required time, fuel, transport, and permission. The Eighth Army had finally forced the crisis it had been preparing for since Montgomery arrived. The line had cracked. What remained was the question of whether Rommel would be allowed to run before the crack became a trap.
