Second El Alamein: Episode 5 — Alam Halfa
Alam Halfa was Rommel’s last major attempt to break through the El Alamein position before the October offensive, and it became a crucial rehearsal for Montgomery’s method. In late August 1942, the Axis tried to strike around the southern flank, push through minefields, and threaten the rear of the Eighth Army, but British preparation, artillery, air power, intelligence, and disciplined armor blocked the move. This episode explains why Montgomery refused to chase Rommel into his preferred mobile battle and instead used ground, guns, and restraint to blunt the attack. Alam Halfa proved that the old desert pattern was changing: Rommel could still hurt the British, but he could no longer dictate the campaign.
